Finding purpose in Business & Life
Building a non-extractive, regenerative ecosystem. A conversation with Neil Gehani, Founder, Mindlumen and Eric Haas at Primal Nature on psychedelics, crypto, distributed co-ops, DAOs
My Journey
I have been dealing with my own trauma from my childhood and deal with anxiety, depression, and ADHC (I personally don’t want to use “disorder” as it can be stigmatizing and isolating). As a neurodivergent person of Indian origin, we are supposed to bury our emotions, our feelings, and not show our vulnerability. Vulnerability is a strength once we learn how to tap into our inner wisdom.
I am not alone. There a many neurodivergent people just like me. With therapeutic use of Psychedelics, it changed my life and now I am on mission to help others seek their own blissful life!
It’s why I started Mind Lumen (a non-profit focused ethics and regenerative capitalism) and Lumara (a platform for mental health & wellbeing services) that matches seekers to ethical and reputable providers of care
Millions of people are suffering from mental health disorders, a crisis of disconnection that has resulted in high rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. We're at a critical point in society where more people are asking for help but find themselves with limited access to effective medicines and the support they need. Psychedelic medicines are already gaining traction. People are curious and not sure if they are READY. When they are READY, they shouldn’t have to wait to get the help they need. It took me 3 years to get the help I needed - that’s too long. It’s going to take a community to enable affordable access to psychedelic healing so that psychedelic healing becomes accessible to all those who need and want it. Business as usual will not cut it. We want to focus our energies on creating an alternative solution: a regenerative ecosystem with an economic model that prioritizes community stakeholders for an equitable society.
The Future We Envision
We envision a regenerative economy where humans develop deeper and more meaningful connections with each other. This psychedelic industry will be an example of how to do that well that will ripple out. We envision a network of collectives coming together to build a regenerative, non-extractive economic ecosystem.
We envision psychedelic medicines being accessible to all who need them. While psychedelics are not for everyone, those who are good candidates deserve access to healing that works. Accessibility will be integrated with safety, accountability, and respect. Some of these medicines have been used by indigenous cultures for many generations. For Mindlumen, we will focus on the journey from preparation to integration in settings beyond the clinic.
Integrating our experiences via therapy will become the norm. It will be like getting preventive care and will be covered by insurance. It’ll be built into our daily lives.
And let’s get all Americans the mental health services they need. More people they can turn to for help, and full parity between physical and mental health care
- President Biden - SOTU, March 1, 2022
All psychedelic substances as well as other “drugs” will be decriminalized or legalized in the US. They will be normalized as “medicines” to treat a variety of conditions.
The psychedelic renaissance is already underway. In 2020, a ballot measure in Oregon passed and legalized psilocybin-assisted therapy. In Oregon alone, it’s expected that training 40-100K facilitators for psilocybin-assisted therapy are needed. If the bill to decriminalize psychedelics (CA SB519) passes, the number of trained facilitators will be 5 to 10x that. Other states, like Washington and Colorado, are considering their own legislation to create access to psychedelic medicine. The demand is going to explode. That’s why Mindlumen exists — to create a frictionless connection between seekers of psychedelic medicine and those providing legal services in this space.
Organizations like Dancesafe, Zendo, and Fireside will provide harm reduction services more openly at events.
Technology, such as the blockchain and cryptocurrency, will enable us to build a distributed, decentralized, and cooperative world. This industry is best suited to that because of its community-oriented ethos. Radical transparency will be the norm. Contributions, including volunteerism, will be rewarded in our ecosystem.
A living wage will be the new benchmark of an equitable society. Cryptocurrency, blockchain, and the DAO are tools to decentralize power structures to foster an equitable society.
Our hope is that if people experience these medicines, we’ll live in a much more peaceful and cooperative world. While not panaceas, these substances are the best catalyst. Coupled with carefully facilitated prep, journey, and integration, it provides a promising solution to healing. We believe that guided sessions with trained and experienced facilitators are the best path to healing, true self-discovery, spiritual and personal growth.
